Genesis 28:12 -13, “He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. “There above it stood the Lord, and He said: ‘I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.”
“Where man tries to rule, God overrules.”
Jacob was fleeing the wrath of his brother Esau after stealing his birthright through deception. That night Jacob stopped to rest and had a dream. In his dream, he saw a ladder, a stair-step structure, that connected heaven and earth. Jacob saw angels going up and down the structure and he also saw God.
This nighttime moment with God was significant. It was Jacob’s first face-to-face encounter with God. Until this point, Jacob had been riding the coattails of his family’s faith. But now, God confirmed that he wasn’t only the God of his grandfather, Abraham, and his father Isaac, but that the covenant would continue with him. God also made it clear that he alone is sovereign. He runs the show. And despite Jacob’s past mistakes, God’s purposes would prevail.
Like Jacob, we will have a “ladder moment” where we must answer some big questions. Who do you really trust to run the show of your life? Do you truly believe that God’s sovereign power is great enough to extend to the affairs of your daily life and the plans you make for each day?
Make a list of all the areas in your life that you are trying to control. Get specific. Throughout the day add to your list as more areas come to mind. By the end of the day, you will probably have a fairly long list. As you get ready to retire for the night, rethink the areas on your list and pray over them one by one. Acknowledge that God is sovereign over each one of them.
Dear God, I acknowledge that you and you alone are sovereign, in control over every area of my life. I submit my daily affairs and plans to your control. I trust you! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
