A Different Choice

Read

1 Corinthians 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Think

In a culture where drinking is expected at everything from weddings to work events, choosing to not drink can feel like swimming against the current. But it’s not always about rules—it’s about making a thoughtful, intentional choice. And more people are doing just that. In fact, nearly one in three U.S. adults under 30 now identifies as a non-drinkers—not because they’re forced to be, but because they’ve considered the impact and decided it’s not for them.

The Bible never says, “Thou shalt not drink.” Instead, it offers guidance and wisdom: don’t be drunk, don’t let your freedom cause someone else to stumble, and whatever you do—do it for God’s glory. Choosing to not drink can be one way of doing just that. For others, it’s choosing to limit their drinking to one drink or choosing to only drink in private.

Some make this choice to protect their influence. Others do it to stand in solidarity with someone battling addiction. For many, it’s about keeping a clear mind and an open heart. Studies show that one in ten drinkers eventually develop alcohol use disorder, and 40% of violent crimes involve alcohol. Those statistics alone give many people reason to pause and consider their habits.

This isn’t about judgment. It’s about freedom—the kind that leads to peace, not regret. Saying “no” to alcohol doesn’t make someone more spiritual. But for many, it’s simply a way to say a better “yes.”

Apply

Decide in advance. Make your choice about drinking before you're in a social setting. That way, you won’t be pressured in the moment—you’ll be confident in your decision.

Pray

Lord, help me make choices that honor you and reflect your love to others. Give me wisdom, strength, and peace as I live with intention. May everything I do—big or small—bring glory to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
