Agreeable Disagreement
Read
Ephesians 4:2-3 “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
Think
In an age marked by startling news headlines, divergent political perspectives, and impassioned social media rants, even the dinner table conversations within our own families can stir the pot of discord. It seems as though our world has transformed overnight, spiraling into an unprecedented era of polarization. Unless one has chosen complete isolation, free from any form of interaction – whether online or in person – chances are they will encounter individuals with whom they vehemently disagree.
In navigating this tumultuous terrain, the Bible serves as our compass, providing both a rule book and a light for our responses. It encourages us to embrace humility and actively engage in listening. Furthermore, as we lend an ear, it is essential to strive for a deeper understanding of the person behind the opinion, seeking to grasp the heart of their perspective.
With this understanding in our arsenal, we can then respond with gentle, biblically-informed wisdom, underpinned by love and the knowledge of the gospel.
Apply
Be slow to anger. Be quick to listen. Pray and ask God to give you the words to diffuse the situation.
Pray
Father, help me to be slow to anger. When feelings of anger begin to build, help me to acknowledge them, but refrain from instantly blurting out an angry response that I will probably regret. Help me be considerate of others and their circumstances. In Jesus' name. Amen.
