Blessed Are Those Who Hunger and Thirst For Righteousness
Read
Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
Think
As Winnie the Pooh wisely said, “What could be more important than a little something to eat?” Hunger is a powerful force—it grabs your attention and drives you to action. When you’re starving, nothing else matters until that need is met. That’s why Jesus used this image. Just like our bodies crave food, our souls crave something deeper. The question isn’t whether we’re hungry—it’s what we’re hungry for. The world tells us to satisfy that craving with success, approval, or comfort, but Jesus says true fulfillment comes from a hunger for righteousness—a right relationship with God.
This isn’t about religious rule-keeping. It’s about a deep, soul-level craving to know God, to live in his truth, and to be transformed by him. The problem is, we often settle for junk food—things that temporarily fill but ultimately leave us empty. We chase achievements, validation, or distractions, thinking they’ll satisfy us. But they never do. The more we consume, the hungrier we become. It’s like drinking salt water—trying to quench our thirst but only making it worse.
Jesus makes a bold promise: if you hunger and thirst for righteousness, you will be filled. Not with temporary satisfaction, but with something lasting—peace that withstands storms, joy that circumstances can’t shake, and a purpose greater than yourself.
So, what are you feeding your soul? What do you run to when you feel empty? The world offers endless distractions, but Jesus offers something real. The feast is set, but only those who come hungry will be filled. What are you truly craving today?
Apply
Replace junk food with spiritual food. Identify one distraction that often takes up your time (social media, entertainment, or worry), and swap it for something that feeds your soul—prayer, worship, or time in the Word.
Pray
God, give me a deep hunger for you—one that outweighs my desire for the temporary things of this world. Fill me with your truth, your presence, and a heart that longs to live in righteousness. Help me to seek you first, knowing that only you truly satisfy. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
