Grow Through The Gospels - Matthew 11
Read: Matthew 11
Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Think
In the Bible, the word "rest" means more than just taking a break. It’s about true refreshment. Think about someone who's been carrying a heavy load for a long time—they don't just need the load taken off; they need a good meal and a chance to recharge. That's the kind of rest the Gospel offers. It doesn't just end our tiring efforts; it revives us, filling us with peace and joy.
When we come to Jesus and trust in him, the heavy burden of guilt is lifted. We see our sins placed on Christ, and we realize God accepts us. There’s no more condemnation, just forgiveness, reconciliation, and the assurance that we are God’s beloved children. This brings a deep, immediate sense of calm and peace that goes beyond mere relief from guilt.
But it doesn't stop there. There's also rest from the power of sin. Trying to overcome sin by ourselves is exhausting and often fruitless. Even when we first understand the Gospel, it can feel more like a battle than a rest. But as we draw closer to Christ and depend on him for our strength, we find that difficult things become easier. By relying on his power, the mountains in our lives start to feel more like manageable hills.
Finally, there’s rest from trying to earn God’s favor through our own efforts. When we believe, we’re no longer under the old law, trying to work our way to God, but are motivated by love. This changes our obedience from a burdensome duty to a joyful act. Initially, we might rely on our own strength, feeling strong when we’re spiritually high and lost when we’re low. However, true rest comes from trusting in Jesus' finished work and his unchanging promises. This kind of rest is dynamic and active, like a river moving with power and grace. It’s not about doing nothing but finding true refreshment and strength in every part of our lives by resting in God.
Apply
Maybe today you struggle with finding rest in Jesus, have you given your life to him. Is he your savior and your friend? God desires to step into your circumstances; he wants to help you. Speak to him and tell him your worries and your cares.
Pray
Lord, I lay my burdens and worries at your feet. Help me to fully trust in the finished work of Christ, knowing that my sins are forgiven, and I am accepted as your child. Teach me to draw closer to you each day, finding rest in your presence and strength in your promises. Remind me to take moments to lay down my burdens in prayer and embrace the rest and refreshment you provide. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
