Helmet of Salvation
Read
Ephesians 6:17 “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.”
Psalm 140:7 “LORD, my Lord, my strong Savior, you shield my head on the day of battle.”
Think
The Roman war helmets were made of metal and leather and some even protected the soldier’s neck and shoulders from attack. There were others that also had cheek plates to protect the face from damage and a brow ridge to guard the eyes. The helmet of salvation is vital because it isn’t just deliverance, safety from sin. It protects against the damaging blows to the head, to the mind. It involves ongoing protection from our enemies, not just quick deliverance. Paul is talking about living this life free and powerful.
The helmet of salvation protects us and keeps our focus where it needs to be: focused on eternity. Salvation is more than future benefits. It’s supposed to impact our present life. But we need to not only receive salvation, we need to apply it. Salvation redeems us. Salvation restores, protects, and shields us from daily attacks from Satan, so we can impact the world for Jesus.
Apply
The helmet of salvation should change how we think, see, speak, and step. Have you not only put your helmet on but also changed your direction? Have you allowed the helmet to guard your mind and guide your words? Are you putting your thoughts through the filter of God’s Word? (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Pray
God, thank you for the gift of salvation. Shield my thoughts and fix my mind on you. Transform my mind by the power of your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
