I Am the Door

Read
John 10:9 (NKJV) “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.”
Think
Have you ever found yourself locked out, frantically searching for the right key? That helpless feeling—knowing you need to get in but can’t—can be frustrating. Now, imagine standing at a door that leads to security, belonging, and life itself, yet choosing to knock on every other door instead. That’s why Jesus made it clear: “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture” (John 10:9).
In the ancient world, sheepfolds didn’t have physical doors. Instead, the shepherd became the door, lying across the entrance at night to guard his sheep. Nothing could enter without going through him first. That’s the image Jesus gives—he’s not just an option, he’s the only way to salvation, security, and abundant life. And yet, so many of us try to sneak in another way. We chase success, approval, and comfort, hoping they’ll bring peace. But Jesus warns us: “All who came before me are thieves and robbers” (John 10:8). These false doors—self-reliance, empty religion, fleeting pleasures—only leave us more lost and weary.
But Jesus? He is the door that opens to life, protection, and freedom. Theologian Alexander Maclaren describes it like this: “Through him, we pass from a world of danger and wandering into a place of security and rest.” When we enter through Christ, we find pasture—a place of nourishment, peace, and provision (John 10:9-10). And Jesus doesn’t just offer life—he offers it abundantly (John 10:10).
Maybe today, you feel like an outsider, unsure if you truly belong. But here’s the truth: The door is open. Jesus isn’t keeping you out—he’s inviting you in. The question is, will you step inside?
Apply
Invite others to the door. Don’t keep the door to life to yourself. This week, encourage a friend, invite someone to church, or simply share how Jesus has been your source of security and peace. The door is open—help others step inside!
Pray
Heavenly Father, you are the only door to true life, security, and peace, and I choose to step through and trust you completely. Help me recognize the false doors I’ve been chasing and turn my heart fully toward you. Let me rest in your presence and share your invitation with others so they, too, can find life in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
