Dear Abby, the beloved advice column that began in 1956, has long provided readers with practical wisdom on life and relationships. In one memorable letter, a reader shared a list of the “Most Important Words” for building meaningful connections: “I am proud of you,” “What is your opinion?” “If you please,” and “Thank you.” The list ends by naming “I” as the least important word, reminding us that genuine relationships thrive when we focus less on ourselves and more on others. This simple list reveals a timeless truth: gratitude, humility, and kindness can transform our interactions and bring lasting joy.
Scripture calls us to live with this same posture of humility and gratitude. In Colossians 3:15, Paul encourages us, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts...and be thankful.” Gratitude in our hearts becomes gratitude in our actions; it changes how we see ourselves and those around us. When we take the time to say “thank you” or ask someone’s opinion, we’re affirming their value and showing Christlike love. Thanksgiving then becomes more than a feeling. It becomes an active way of honoring others and creating a spirit of unity.
Jesus’s command to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39) reminds us that true gratitude goes hand in hand with humility. By focusing on others—whether through a kind word, a thoughtful question, or genuine thanks—we move beyond ourselves and embrace the love God calls us to live out. Thanksgiving isn’t just about listing blessings; it’s about seeing the worth in each person.
This Thanksgiving, let’s let these “Most Important Words” shape how we approach life. Rather than centering on ourselves, let’s prioritize others by listening, encouraging, and showing our appreciation openly. Thanksgiving isn’t just a day; it’s a way of life that blesses everyone we encounter.

Show others you value their thoughts by asking for their opinion on something, even if it’s a small decision. This practice helps build respect and shows humility.
Pray
God, thank you for the blessings in my life and all the people you have placed around me. Help me to be intentional in showing gratitude and valuing others. Teach me to focus less on myself and more on the ways I can encourage and lift up those around me. May my words and actions reflect your love and kindness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
