Is Church Optional?
Read
Hebrews 10:24-25 “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the day approaching.”
Think
Have you ever wondered why church matters? In a world where you can stream sermons and worship from home, it’s easy to question, “Why do I need to actually go to church?” The church is more than a place to hear a message—it’s a community where we grow, serve, and love together as one body. Gathering with others who share our faith brings encouragement and support that we simply can’t find in isolation. Church is where believers can lift each other up and face life’s challenges together.
Church is where we experience God’s presence in a unique and powerful way. It’s about listening to the Word and living it out with others. The Bible calls us to gather, to learn from one another, and to grow deeper in our faith through community. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “The physical presence of other Christians is a source of incomparable joy and strength to the believer.” We were never meant to walk the journey of faith alone; church is where we find that strength.
Church is also essential for spiritual growth. We can’t mature in isolation. In the body of Christ, we’re challenged to live out our faith, serve others, and be shaped by those around us. Being part of a church allows us to build relationships where we can learn together and become more like Christ through our interactions.
Finally, church reminds us that we belong. Alexander Maclaren said, “There is a sacredness in tears, and a fellowship in suffering that draws us closer to one another and to God.” The church is where we find family and are reminded that we’re not alone. Through the community of believers, we experience Christ’s love in action. Church is not just something we attend—it’s a vital part of who we are as followers of Jesus.

Pray
Lord, thank you for the gift of the church and the community of believers you’ve given me. Help me to see the importance of being part of your body, not just attending but truly engaging with others. Give me the courage to build relationships, serve, and grow. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
