It Is Finished

Read

John 19:30 “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

Think

Three words. Spoken through labored breath. Hanging between heaven and earth. “It is finished.”

Not “I am finished.” Not “This is over.” But “It is finished.”

With those words, Jesus didn’t just mark the end of his suffering—he declared the beginning of our freedom.

Good Friday isn’t good because of what happened to Jesus. It’s good because of what happened for us. On that cross, Jesus took every sin, every shame, every failure, and made it his own. He bore the punishment we deserved so we could receive the grace we never earned.

The cross wasn’t an accident—it was a rescue plan. From the beginning, Jesus had set his face toward it. He wasn’t trapped; he was surrendered. He wasn’t defeated; he was victorious. And with bloodied hands stretched wide, he embraced the full weight of humanity’s brokenness.

Isaiah said it this way: “He was pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities… and by his wounds, we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

We like to skip ahead to Easter. We want the empty tomb without the bloody cross. But resurrection only means something because of the price that was paid. If we don’t pause here—at the foot of the cross—we miss the depth of Jesus’ love.

This isn’t just a historical moment. It’s a personal invitation.

When Jesus said, “It is finished,” the temple veil tore in two—from top to bottom—signaling that the barrier between God and man was gone. Access was open. Shame was shattered. Forgiveness was declared a gift, not a reward.

Whatever you’re carrying today—guilt, regret, fear—Jesus carried it first. And when he died, it died with him.

Sit with that. Don’t rush past the cross. Let it humble you. Let it heal you. Let it remind you that love isn’t just a feeling—it’s a sacrifice. One Jesus made willingly. For you.

Apply

As you reflect on the cross today, think of someone who needs the hope Jesus offers. Text or call them. Invite them to join you at church this Easter. Let what Jesus did for you move you to share that love with someone else.

Pray

Jesus, thank you for the cross. Thank you for staying, for suffering, for choosing me in your darkest hour. Help me never grow numb to what you did. Today, I remember the price you paid, and I receive the grace you freely give. It is finished—and because of that, I am free. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
