Mary Came Around
Read:
Luke 1:29,34, 38, 46-47
Luke 1:29, “Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be… ‘How will this be,’ Mary asked the angel, ‘since I am a virgin’?...’I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’ …And Mary said, ‘My soul glorifies the Lord… and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.’”
Think:
Did you notice Mary’s initial response to the angel? She responded like most people would if an angel showed up and started talking. Even the words “greatly troubled” show us her feelings – she was agitated. The word wondered, in Greek, means “to make an audit, to be intensely rational.” She had honest questions, but she was open.
With the words “How will this be?” we watch Mary’s faith grow as she keeps asking genuine questions. She wants to learn more. Then in verse 38, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” She is saying, “I will pursue, I will follow. Even if I don’t completely understand I will submit to your plans, God.” This is faith.
In this brief passage, we see Mary’s transformation. Her measured obedience becomes joyful surrender as she chooses to trust the God of the universe.
Act:
What questions do you have for Jesus today? Go ahead and ask Him. He is trustworthy!
Pray:
God, help me to trust and follow You joyfully, even when I have questions. Amen.
