Maundy Thursday

Read:

Matthew 26:26-29  “While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.’”

Think:

“Maundy” comes from the Latin word for “command.” Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter, believed to be when Jesus celebrated his final Passover with his disciples and when he gave them instructions about what was to come. Jesus and his disciples gathered around the table, familiar with the Passover ritual. They knew the lamb was slain, the prayers recited, and songs sung. Everything reminded them of God freeing the Israelites from slavery. This was customary, familiar.

But this night was different. The cross loomed over their heads. This was no ordinary Passover; it meant much more. The broken bread symbolized the manna God provided in the wilderness, but it would take on a far greater meaning in the coming hours. The wine representing the lamb’s blood was sacred this night. The blood of the lamb, like that used to seal God’s covenant promises, would soon spill on the cross. His blood would change everything.

The Last Supper is a common thread for all believers. It proclaims the gospel, the good news, to us and others. This meal remembering Jesus covering our sins and paying our debt is an emotional reminder that we are free.

For all who have trusted Jesus as their Savior, we can live free and take the Lord’s Supper from a place of purpose and liberation. Today, take a moment to say “thank you” and recall what Jesus has done for you. Ask God to bring to mind someone you can invite to celebrate Easter with you this weekend, so they can also experience his freedom.

Jesus, you paid the price for my freedom. Thank you for dying a sinner’s death on the cross. I am forever grateful. Help me to live for you. Show me someone who needs your love and give me the words to say so that I can share this resurrection story. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
