Psalm 46:10 “He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’”
Proverbs 19:21 “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
Think
Have you ever felt those words slip from your lips, “I feel out of control” or “Who’s in control here?” We’re all in this constant battle for control, chasing after something like catching a unicorn – impossible.
In the 1940s, Reinhold Niebuhr penned lines that can serve as a guiding light when we’re fighting for control, known as “The Serenity Prayer.”
Give us the serenity to accept what we can’t change, the courage to change what we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
As followers of Jesus, we’re called to surrender control of our lives to Christ. If you are constantly frustrated and worn out, maybe it’s because you’re still trying to wrestle for lordship over your circumstances. Control becomes the enemy of peace and rest, but Jesus invites us to surrender and find true rest in him. He can take everything we give him and turn it into opportunities to reveal his glory in our lives.
When we release our grip on control and allow Jesus to have his way, incredible things begin to happen. Our worries and anxieties lose their power as we trust in his plans. It’s a daily surrender, a constant letting go of our need to manage everything on our own. But in that surrender, we discover a peace that transcends understanding and a rest that rejuvenates our souls.
Today, let’s refocus our perspective and choose to surrender control to Jesus. Let him guide our steps, knowing that he can turn our challenges into triumphs and our struggles into stories of his faithfulness. Trust in his wisdom, lean on his strength, and experience the freedom that comes from letting go and letting God work and receive the glory.
Apply
Think about the areas where you struggle to release control – it could be relationally, financially, or even emotionally. Now complete this sentence for each area, “God I’m going to let go and trust you with ___________.”
Pray
God, I confess that I often try to control things on my own, leading to frustration and weariness. But I know that true peace and rest come from trusting in you completely. Help me let go of my need for control and embrace your perfect plan for my life. Guide me in surrendering every area of my life to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
