The Real Answer to Control
Read
Romans 6:14 “For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.”
Think
Addiction doesn’t always look like the stereotype. It can be the nightly drink to unwind, the scrolling that never ends, the secret habit that feels impossible to break. Underneath it all is the same aching question: why can’t I stop?
The Bible doesn’t ignore that question—it speaks directly to it. Sin, by nature, enslaves. What starts as a comfort becomes a controller. One theologian writes that sin gains power through deceit, offering satisfaction while tightening its grip. That’s why willpower isn’t enough. Rules won’t heal us. Shame won’t free us. But grace can.
Romans 6 tells us that sin no longer has dominion—not because we got stronger, but because grace got louder. The gospel isn’t behavior modification—it’s heart transformation. Spurgeon once said, “The grace that does not change my life will not save my soul.” Real change starts when we stop trying to control our addiction and start surrendering to the One who already conquered it.
Jesus didn’t die to make us better at managing sin. He died to break its chains. In Christ, we are not just forgiven—we are free. But freedom isn’t always instant. As one addiction counselor put it, “God delivers some people in a moment. He walks with others daily. Either way, the miracle is the same.”
The real answer to control isn’t more control. It’s surrender. Grace doesn’t excuse our struggle—it empowers us to overcome it. If you feel trapped, you’re not too far gone. You’re just one honest prayer away from help, one surrendered moment away from hope.
Apply
Set one small boundary. Pick one clear, simple step to create space between you and your struggle—delete the app, avoid that aisle, change the routine. Small steps build strong habits.
Pray
God, I’m tired of trying to fix this on my own. I surrender my struggle to you—my need for control, my addiction, my weakness. Fill me with your grace and strength, and remind me that in you, I’m not stuck—I’m free. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
