Under the Influence: Alcohol

Read

Ephesians 5:18 “Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.”

Think

There’s a reason they call alcohol “spirits.” It promises relief, escape, and confidence—but often delivers regret, shame, and brokenness. For many, it starts small. A drink to relax. A moment to fit in. But over time, what once felt like freedom can become a chain.

Scripture doesn’t say, “Thou shalt not drink,” but it does offer strong warnings. It clearly draws a line at drunkenness—a state where good judgment is lost, actions are reckless, and the gospel we carry is blurred by the choices we make. As one theologian put it, drunkenness shows itself in impaired thinking, diminished moral restraint, and actions that damage your witness or endanger others.

But this isn’t just about drinking. It’s about what’s driving you. What’s filling the space inside you that aches to be settled? Ephesians 5:18 offers a contrast: don’t be filled with wine, but be filled with the Spirit. One numbs pain—temporarily. The other brings peace—eternally.

Being under the influence of alcohol leads to loss of control. But being under the influence of the Spirit leads to clarity, purpose, and power. The Holy Spirit doesn’t just steady you—he strengthens you.

So ask yourself: what’s influencing your decisions, your attitude, your story? Is it a substance…or your Savior?

Apply

Limit your access. If drinking is becoming too frequent, make a choice to remove it from your home or limit the environments where it’s tempting. A small boundary can protect a big calling.

Pray

Heavenly Father, fill me with your Spirit instead of anything that pulls me away from you. Help me choose what leads to peace, not regret. I want to be led by you in every moment. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
