Baptism: What, Why and How
Read
Matthew 28:19-20 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Baptism is one of the most significant steps in a Christian's faith journey. It symbolizes our union with Christ in his death and resurrection. When we are immersed in water, it represents dying to our old life of sin, and as we rise, it signifies being raised to new life in Christ. This isn't just a symbolic ritual; it's a powerful declaration of what God has done in our hearts—an outward sign of an inward transformation.
So, why is baptism so important? It is an act of obedience to Jesus' command in Matthew 28:19, where he instructs us to "make disciples...baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit." Baptism is a declaration of faith, a public commitment to Christ. Baptism symbolizes cleansing—just as water cleanses the body, Christ’s sacrifice cleanses our souls.
Theologian Albert Barnes reflects that baptism depicts washing away sins and a commitment to live a new life. He writes, “It is a solemn profession of allegiance to Christ and a pledge to live according to his will.” This makes baptism more than just a tradition; it’s a serious step of faith, demonstrating our dedication to follow Christ and live in the newness of life he provides.
Many people say baptism is like a wedding ring: "The ring doesn’t make you married, but it is a powerful symbol of the commitment you’ve made." In the same way, baptism doesn’t save us, but it publicly shows that we have been saved and are committed to walking with Jesus. It’s an outward demonstration of an inward commitment. It’s a powerful testimony to the world that we belong to Christ. If you haven’t been baptized, consider taking this step to declare your faith and commitment.
