Breaking Free From Envy

Read
1 Corinthians 13:4 "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud."
Think
Have you ever felt the sting of envy—the ache of seeing someone else’s highlight reel and feeling like your life doesn’t measure up? Maybe it’s a friend landing the dream job, a neighbor upgrading to the house you’ve always wanted, or a stranger posting their picture-perfect vacation. Envy is subtle but destructive. It doesn’t just make you unhappy—it eats away at your soul. Charlie Munger in Psychology Today captured it when he said, “The world is not driven by greed, it’s driven by envy.”
But here’s the thing about envy: it lies. It tells you that someone else’s blessings mean less for you, that God is holding out on you. It whispers, “You’re not enough,” and it steals your joy. Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 13:4, “Love does not envy,” aren’t just a suggestion—they’re a rescue plan. Envy blocks love. It makes it impossible to truly celebrate others, and it leaves you bitter, isolated, and longing for more.
When we envy, we forget who God is. G.K. Chesterton said, “Envy is the art of counting the other fellow’s blessings instead of your own.” But love is different. Love trusts that God’s goodness isn’t limited. The same God who is blessing someone else, sees you. He hasn’t forgotten you. His plan for you is just as intentional, just as beautiful—even if you can’t see it yet.
So, why should you let go of envy? Because it’s robbing you of joy, gratitude, and connection. Instead, practice gratitude daily. Celebrate others’ wins as if they were your own. And take your envy to God—he already knows and is ready to fill your heart with peace and trust. When love replaces envy, it frees you to live with joy, contentment, and deep confidence in God’s plan.

Limit comparison triggers. Take a break from social media or other platforms that fuel envy. Instead, use that time to connect with God in prayer or reflect on his goodness in your life.
Pray
Heavenly Father, thank you for the blessings you have poured into my life, even the ones I sometimes overlook. Help me to release envy, and trust that your plans for me are good and intentional. Teach me to celebrate others’ successes with a genuine heart and to rest in the peace of your perfect purpose for my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
