Grow Through The Gospels - John 14
Read: John 14
John 14:1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.”
Think
Jesus understood the anxiety and distress his disciples felt. They were troubled by the news of his impending departure and Peter's denial. Knowing their hearts, Jesus didn't just command them to stop worrying; he promised divine help to sustain them. He shared a powerful "secret to success" for overcoming fear and dread: faith in him and in God the Father.
When life's sorrows come like crashing waves, we have a refuge, "a shelter in the time of storm." The disciples were about to endure the darkest days imaginable. Jesus would be crucified, leaving them feeling lost and abandoned. Yet, he offered them peace through faith: "Believe." Trusting in God's promises provides security even when circumstances are uncertain or horrific (John 16:33). As the hymn beautifully states, "When peace like a river attendeth my way, and sorrows like sea billows roll. Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, 'It is well, it is well with my soul!'" Jesus urged them to keep believing in him and in the Father, the source of all comfort, peace, and strength.
Faith in Jesus means relying on his assurance that he is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). It’s a faith that leans on his promise that he has overcome the world (John 16:33). This belief extends to trusting God’s steadfast love and mercy, as seen in Lamentations 3:22-23, where we are reminded that his mercies are new every morning. It involves embracing the peace that surpasses all understanding, which will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). Faith also means remembering God's past faithfulness and deliverance, like David did when he faced Goliath, recalling how God helped him defeat the lion and the bear (1 Samuel 17:37).
Today, we have even more reasons to trust and not be troubled. We have experienced God's deliverance in past troubles, received the Holy Spirit as our Comforter, and have the whole counsel of Scripture. With these blessings, we can say, "My heart shall not be troubled," knowing that God's promises and presence are our firm foundation. Through faith, we find a steadfast hope and a peace that anchors our souls.
