Jesus - Fully God, Yet Fully Man

The mystery of Jesus being fully God and fully man is one of the most profound truths of our faith. It’s a concept that stretches our understanding, yet it’s central to who Jesus is and what he accomplished for us. As Wayne Grudem explains, Jesus did not lose any of his divinity when he took on human flesh; he remained fully God while also becoming fully man. This means that Jesus understands our struggles, our pain, and our temptations because he lived as one of us. Yet, at the same time, he has the power and authority of God to save us and transform our lives.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German pastor and theologian who stood against the Nazi regime, reflected on the humility of Christ’s incarnation, saying, “God becomes human, truly human out of love for humanity.” This humility is what makes Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross so powerful. If Jesus were merely a man, his death would be a tragic loss, but not a redemptive act. However, because he is fully God, his death carries infinite value, capable of redeeming all who trust in him. This truth brings us hope because it means that no matter how deep our sin or how broken our lives, Jesus has the power to restore us completely.

Alexander Maclaren adds that this union of divinity and humanity in Christ is what makes him the perfect mediator between God and humanity. His humanity allows him to relate to our experiences and struggles, while his divinity gives him the power to offer a perfect and eternal salvation. This dual nature of Christ is not just a theological concept but a deeply comforting reality that assures us we are never alone and we are always loved by the One who has both walked in our shoes and holds the universe in his hands.

Jesus’ dual nature is a source of strength in our daily lives. When we face trials, we can remember that Jesus, our Savior, knows exactly what we’re going through, and he has the power to carry us through it. His humanity connects him to our experience, and his divinity gives him the authority to help us in ways no one else can. So, as we navigate life’s challenges, let’s hold on to the truth that Jesus is both fully God and fully man—the perfect Savior who understands us deeply and loves us completely.
