Mighty God: The Warrior Who Fights for You
Read
Isaiah 9:6 "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
Think
Think about the battles you face every day. Maybe it’s the weight of anxiety that clouds your thoughts or the ache of a loss that feels too heavy to bear. Perhaps it’s the quiet but relentless voice of inadequacy telling you you’re not enough. These struggles can leave us feeling helpless and alone, but Isaiah 9:6 offers a life-changing promise: Jesus is our Mighty God. In Hebrew, this title is El Gibbor, meaning a powerful warrior who steps into the fight for us, bringing victory and strength where we see only defeat.
What makes Jesus so extraordinary is how personal his might is. He’s not a distant God observing from the heavens; he steps into the mess of our lives with love and authority. He carried the weight of our sins to the cross, defeating the ultimate enemies of sin and death. J.I. Packer wrote, “The Christmas message is that there is hope for a ruined humanity… because at the Father’s will, Jesus Christ became poor and was born in a stable so that thirty years later he might hang on a cross.” That is El Gibbor: a God who doesn’t just promise victory—he guarantees it through his sacrifice and resurrection.
But how often do we try to fight our battles alone? We exhaust ourselves striving to fix what’s broken, to prove we’re strong enough, only to fall short. Jesus, our Mighty God, invites us to stop striving and start trusting. His strength is made perfect in our weakness, and his power is more than enough to carry us through anything life throws our way.
This Advent, as we reflect on the promise of El Gibbor, bring your burdens to Jesus. Let the One who holds the universe hold your heart and your fears. Trust him to be the warrior you need, fighting for you when you can’t fight for yourself. In his hands, you’ll find not just strength but peace, knowing you’re never alone in the battle. Jesus is your Mighty God, and with him, victory is certain.
Apply
Identify one specific challenge you’re facing, whether it’s a fear, a decision, or a burden, and bring it to Jesus in prayer. Say, “Lord, this is too big for me. I trust you to fight for me.”
Pray
Lord, thank you for being my strength when I feel weak and my victory when I feel defeated. You see the battles I face, and you fight for me in ways I cannot. Help me to trust you with my struggles, to stop striving in my own strength, and to rest in the assurance that you are with me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
