Unchanging God
Read
Hebrews 13:8 "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."
Numbers 23:19 "God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?"
Think
Have you ever noticed how quickly things around us change? Think about telephones. We went from no phones in the car to car phones with cords, and now we have no phones in the house except for cell phones. Seasons shift, friendships evolve, and our desires and plans seem in constant flux. In a world where change is the only constant, it’s comforting to know that God is unchanging—he remains the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). God’s immutability means he is forever consistent in his character, purposes, and promises. While everything else around us may be unpredictable, God’s faithfulness never wavers.
Imagine you’re building a house on sand—no matter how solid your structure, the foundation will always be unstable. This is how life feels when we place our trust in things that change. But when our foundation is built on the unchanging nature of God, we can stand firm. God reassures us in Malachi 3:6, "I the Lord do not change." This truth provides a solid ground for our faith, giving us peace even when life feels like a storm.
C.S. Lewis once said, "The great thing, if one can, is to stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one's ‘own,’ or ‘real’ life. The truth is, of course that what one calls the interruptions are precisely one’s real life—the life God is sending one day by day." While our circumstances and emotions may shift, God’s purposes for us remain constant. He’s working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28), even when we can’t see the complete picture. Trusting in God’s unchanging nature allows us to embrace each moment, knowing that he is in control and that his plans for us are steadfast.
Today, let’s take comfort in knowing that our God is unchanging. As we face life’s uncertainties, let’s anchor ourselves in the fact that his love, promises, and character are forever the same. Lean on God, and remember that while everything else might shift, the foundation of his faithfulness will never be shaken.
Apply
Identify one specific situation where you’ve been struggling with the unpredictability of life. Each day, remind yourself of God’s unchanging nature by meditating on Malachi 3:6, which reads, “I the Lord do not change.” Call on him to be your anchor.
Pray
God, I come to you in the middle of the chaos of this world, which feels overwhelming at times. Thank you for being unchanging, and for your love, promises, and faithfulness that remain constant throughout my life. Help me to rest in the truth that you are the same yesterday, today, and forever. When I face uncertainty, remind me to anchor myself in your unchanging nature. I surrender my fears and anxieties to you, trusting that you are my solid foundation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
