What Happens After We Die?

John 11:25-26 "Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?'"

Death is something we will all face, but for those who trust in Christ, it doesn’t have to be something we fear. The Bible teaches that when we die, our souls go to one of two places: either into the presence of God or into separation from him. For believers, death is a transition into eternal life with God. Paul reassures us in 2 Corinthians 5:8 that “to be away from the body is to be at home with the Lord.” This hope reminds us that death is not the end but the beginning of something far greater.
The Bible describes a very different reality for those who don’t know Christ. The absence of a relationship with God means eternal separation from him. Those who reject God’s offer of salvation will face eternal separation and torment. This is a sobering truth, but one rooted in the justice and holiness of God. Jesus warned about this reality, urging us to choose him while we still have time. The Bible makes it clear that there are eternal consequences for our choices in this life.
D.L. Moody once said, “Soon you will read in the papers that I am dead. Don’t believe a word of it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now.” His words reflect the confidence we can have in Christ—that death, for the believer, is not the end, but a glorious beginning in the presence of God. This truth offers comfort and hope but also calls us to examine where we stand with God.
Are you ready for eternity?
Today, let the reality of death and what follows it brings clarity to your heart. If you’ve trusted Christ, rest in the peace of knowing that eternal life with him awaits. If you haven’t yet made that decision, there is no better time to accept the gift of eternal life he offers! You can simply admit that you’re a sinner; believe that Jesus was the Son of God who lived a perfect life, died so you could be forgiven, and rose back to life again; and choose to turn from your sin and turn to Jesus as the Lord of your life . God is ready and waiting to welcome you into his family – today and for all of eternity!

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of salvation. Help me to live each day with eternity in mind, trusting you with both my life and my death. If there are areas of my heart that need to be turned toward you, please show me and give me the courage to respond. For those who don’t yet know you, I pray that you would open their hearts to your love and truth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
